This Autumn, Recycle for London will be focussing on promoting re-use and repair. As part of this focus, Wandsworth Council have teamed up with The Old School Club to run a 'Love your Clothes' sewing workshop for local residents.

Clothing consumption, however, currently accounts for over 5% of the UK’s total annual carbon and water footprints. With Love Your Clothes, a campaign aimed at reducing the impact of clothing on the environment, we're calling on Londoners to make small, manageable changes that will make a big difference. If we all used our clothes for just nine months longer (extending their average life to around three years), their carbon, water and waste footprints would be reduced by a huge 20-30%!

The sewing workshop (using mostly hand sewing and some machine sewing) will focus on sharing basic repair skills to increase the life of your clothes. It will also provide an excellent opportunity to repair or refashion your pre-loved items and meet like minded people to share these skills and knowledge with, regardless of ability.

Workshops will cover some or all of the following:

  • shortening or adding materials
  • mending and darning holes
  • Sew on missing buttons, fix buttonholes & zips
  • Taking up trousers/skirts
  • Altering waistlines
  • Sewing on buttons/making buttonholes
  • Quick fixes for tears, including patching, embroidery & some creative stitching!
  • Re-threading cords and elasticated areas (hand sewing)
  • Bring some of your own pieces
  • Meet other people!
